So it’s finally June and things are hotting up, well sort of. The weather has been a little rubbish at times and it was certainly the case this saturday morning when all hell broke lose and the heaven opened up! The week before I had my D5100 + Tokina 11-16mm fly in the sea at Cadaques thanks to it’s stupidly strong winds! Both bits of kit were water damaged beyond repair unfortunately, so I wasn’t about to stick another, older camera in the wet weather so willingly today! The rain soon stopped after giving the city a good wash and by 4pm, it was the sun’s turn to blast out a good dose of UV rays.
Off Camera Flash was todays topic, something a bit different that means more kit to look at and play with but you do get a heavier bag to lung around! Well not much of a walk today as we stayed static in just two areas of the park while Ben explained some lighting techniques with a reflector to begin, to then how you would replace the reflector with the off camera flash to activate a simliar look. It is certainly a level up for many but with some amazing results in the end! You need to go behind ‘A’uto and live on the ‘M’anuel controls for this as it won’t work if not, just like in a studio. (I have however met so called ‘photographers’ using some automatic camera settings in studio flash situations needless to say, they have no idea what they are doing!) ‘M’ is nothing to be scared by, only 3 settings to change: Speed + Aperture + ISO. Think triangle! I do appreciate that for most people it is hard to come to grips with the concept of it without being able to experiment with it for a for hours in order to get your head around it and understand the problems you may come across with Off Camera Flash. (All the photos below are taken using good reflector work by the assistant and naturel day light.)
